“The Three Erie Canals: History and Folklore” will be speaker Bruce Schwendy’s topic on Tuesday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairport Public Library. New York’s Erie Canal went through three eras: the original canal “Clinton’s Ditch” completed in 1825, the enlarged canal completed in 1862, and today’s barge canal system which was completed in 1918. Schwendy, a member of the board of directors of the Canal Society of New York, will discuss the folklore of the Erie Canal and some common misconceptions about its history. He will also demonstrate some actual canal horns and explain how they were used for signaling on the early canals. A graduate of Clarkson University, Schwendy is retired from General Motors where he was a manufacturing engineer. He has studied New York State canal history for many years and enjoys traveling with his wife Donna the length of the New York canal system on their 40-foot houseboat, the Li’l Rooster. Because this program will be held at the Fairport Public Library, RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Call 223-9091 or visit www.FairportLibrary.org for reservation details. This event is free and open to all.
