About The Event Broken Glass By Arthur Miller Directed by Donald Brian Bartalo Sylvia Gellberg is mysteriously paralyzed from the waist down. There is nothing physically wrong with her. THE STORY: “Brooklyn, New York. The end of November, 1938. Sylvia Gellberg has suddenly, mysteriously, become paralyzed from the waist down. As the play opens, her husband, Phillip, and her doctor, Dr. Hyman, meet to discuss the prognosis and test results. The doctor assures Phillip that physically, there is nothing wrong with his wife and that she is sane, but advises the only way to discover the cause of her paralysis is to probe into her psyche. In his attempts to uncover the truth about Sylvia's paralysis, Dr. Hyman, via conversations with Phillip, Sylvia, and her sister, Harriet, discovers that the Gellberg's marriage was built on resentment and that over the years has become loveless. Dr. Hyman's obsessive determination to cure Sylvia leads him to discover that her paralysis occurred quickly after a newspaper report on Krystallnacht [Nov. 9-10, 1938, Nazi violence against Jews in Germany, called the ‘night of broken glass’] and an accompanying photograph of two old men forced to clean the streets of Germany with toothbrushes.”

Arthur Asher Miller [1915-2005] was an American playwright, essayist, and controversial figure in the twentieth-century American theater. Miller’s most notable works included All My SonsDeath of a Salesman, and The CrucibleBROKEN GLASS, written in 1994, was the last play Miller ever wrote. Many theatre critics believed that Miller used this writing to question his own identity as a Jew, man, husband, father, and even as a playwright. The play is set in Brooklyn November, 1938 as the German Nazis begin the harassment of Jews living in Berlin. This oppression is known as Krystallnacht—Broken Glass
