Community Read: White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo

*The event has already taken place on this date: Wed, 07/22/2020
The Mendon Public Library is hosting COMMUNITY READ: White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. This is an event open to anyone and everyone in the HFL community, geared toward educating ourselves and starting the conversation among our majorly white community regarding white privilege, the role it plays in racism, and why it is so difficult for us to talk about it.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

For hundreds of years white Americans have been ignoring and perpetuating systemic racism that inherently exists in our country. White people hold privilege simply because of the color of our skin, termed white privilege. This does not dismiss the other barriers and struggles that we have had to face in our lives, however, it simply means that as born into the white race, we have not had the additional burdens and barriers to overcome in life that Black people experience from the day they are born.
As a community with an overwhelmingly white majority population, we have been called to action to confront, acknowledge, and understand our white privilege in order to create an actively antiracist society. While there are so many important ways in which we need to work towards making an antiracist culture and community, education and communication is a massive piece of that puzzle.

We ask that you read the book before Wednesday, July 22nd, when we will meet for small group discussions (hopefully in-person, socially distanced with masks, of course!) facilitated by members of our community. Everyone is encouraged to read the book and participate in a dialogue to whatever extent you feel comfortable. This is an opportunity to be open and grow personally and collectively as a community because BLACK LIVES MATTER!

Please RSVP to the email below with name, age, email, and whether you would participate in discussion if it were in person or virtual or BOTH!
