About the Program
Be transported to the world of beauty and devotion through The Ghent-Bruges Book of Hours, the new joint acquisition by the University’s River Campus Libraries and MAG. This splendid example of a prayer book is exquisitely illuminated with flowers, birds, fruits, and figures rendered in the Ghent-Bruges manner. The paintings, attributed to the Master of the Prayer Books of 1500, are works of art in their own right and make each page come to life.
Filled with images and texts, a book of hours served as an aide to prayer in the Christian tradition, allowing the reader to recite the manuscripts at specific hours of the day. Patrons could have their books personalized according to their devotional preferences.
Join Anna Siebach-Larsen, Director of the Rossell Hope Robbins Library and the Koller-Collins Center for English Studies at the University of Rochester, and Nancy Norwood, MAG’s Curator of European Art, as they discuss this extraordinary acquisition, and view The Ghent-Bruges Book of Hours in MAG’s Medieval Gallery. Guests will also be able to see all of the pages up close on an interactive screen.
Museum admission included.
