HYSO Mother’s Day Concert

The program includes selections from Bizet’s "Carmen," Ravel’s "Pavane pour une infante défunte," Shostakovich’s "Festive Overture," Russell Scarbrough’s "Solaces," and Rimsky-Korsakov’s "Capriccio Espagnol."
The concert features HYSO Concerto Competition Winner Raymond Feng performing the first movement from Rachmaninoff’s epic Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor and HYSO Concerto Competition Winner Grace Taylor performing the first movement of Jacob’s delightful Concerto for Horn and Strings. HYSO Conductor Apprentices Nicholas Kinney and Nicole Page conduct the orchestra in two selections.
Raymond Feng (Pittsford), a senior at Pittsford Sutherland High School, studies piano with Elier Suarez and violin with Nancy Hunt. Since age 9, Raymond has been a top prizewinner of numerous international and national piano competitions, such as the West Virginia International Piano Competition, Thousand Islands Chopin International Piano Competition, David D. Dubois Piano Competition, Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition, and MostArts Piano Competition, among others. He was honored to receive the Rochester Music Hall of Fame’s 2019 Douglas Lowry Award on April 27. As piano soloist, he has collaborated with orchestras in Perugia, Italy, Boston, Chicago, Austin, Rochester, Ithaca, and others in upstate New York. His concerto performance with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra was broadcast on NPR’s From the Top radio show. Raymond was selected as a 2016-2018 Lang Lang International Music Foundation Young Scholar and was invited to perform at the 2018 Grammy Salute to Classical Music concert in honor of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. Major concert venues Raymond has performed at include Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Sanders Theatre at Harvard University, and Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park in Chicago. As a violinist, Raymond serves as the concertmaster of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and was also the conductor apprentice for the 2017-2018 season.
Grace Taylor (Greece) is a graduating senior at Greece Odyssey Academy. She has been playing horn for eight years and has been affiliated with The Hochstein School for six years. Grace has been studying with Colleen Wolf since eighth grade and will continue her studies by double majoring in horn performance and music education at Nazareth College. She has been with the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra for four years and has been principal horn for the past two years. She also has participated in the Hochstein Youth Wind Symphony for the past four years and the Junior Wind Symphony for two years. She also had the opportunity to perform in a scholarship woodwind quintet at Hochstein under the direction of Diane Smith for two years. Grace has been in All-County, Area All-State, and Conference All-State bands, orchestras, and ensembles.
Nicole Page (Penfield) is a senior at Penfield High School has been studying flute with Julie Oris-Heikkula for nine years. She became involved with Hochstein in middle school through the Hochstein Junior Wind Symphony, and is now pleased to be Principal Flute and Piccolo of both HYSO and the Hochstein Youth Wind Symphony. Nicole also has studied piano and recently began studying viola. She plans to major in physics for her undergraduate degree before attending medical school.
Nicholas Kinney (Pittsford) is a senior at Pittsford Sutherland High School. Nick has been a cellist in HYSO for five years. When not playing the cello or conducting, Nick is an avid thespian, participating in theater groups all over the Rochester area. He recently portrayed Juan Peron in "Evita" at his high school, as well as Hal in "Proof," a play at Spotlight Theater Arts. Nick plans to pursue musical theater in college.
