Eliot Heaton, violin Geoffrey Herd, violin Esther Park, piano Ettore Causa, viola Eric Wong, viola Max Geissler, cello “Once upon a time…” opens the door to tales of impossible things and wondrous adventures; it is an equally apt beginning for this concert, in which we’ll hear such stories explored and depicted through music. Schumann’s Märchenbilder (‘Fairy Tale Pictures’) is a set of charming character pieces, while Shih-Hui Chen’s programmatic work Returning Souls introduces us to the legends of the Amis people of Taiwan. More a saga than fable, Mendelssohn’s second viola quintet is replete with drama, exuberance, and pathos – all the elements of a gripping narrative.
