Schumann’s Märchenbilder (‘Fairy Tale Pictures’) is a set of charming character pieces, while Shih-Hui Chen’s programmatic work Returning Souls introduces us to the legends of the Amis people of Taiwan. More a saga than fable, Mendelssohn’s second viola quintet is replete with drama, exuberance, and pathos – all the elements of a gripping narrative.
