Macbeth, by the Rochester Community Players

Celebrate the 25th season of Rochester Community Players: Shakespeare Program with Macbeth, running July 12–27 (at 8pm on Tuesdays–Sundays), at Highland Bowl. All performances are free and open to the public. Follow Macbeth’s twisted journey as he moves from ambition to murder in pursuit of the crown — aided by his encounters with three cryptic witches and abetted by his wife, Lady Macbeth.

Macbeth is a hero when he helps to put down a rebellion against the reigning monarch. But when three witches prophesy that Macbeth himself will become king, he makes the prediction come true by assassinating the very monarch he had defended and taking the crown himself. He has set in motion a chain reaction of violence: to hide his crime, he has to keep killing, until all of Scotland runs in blood. But he can never rest easy, and so returns to the witches hungry for knowledge that he desperately hopes will give him peace.

According to the director, Jean Gordon Ryon, “Our production of Macbeth takes place in medieval Scotland, a world just emerging from the Dark Ages, where civilization is underscored with violence and ruthlessness, and sinister unknowable elements toy with the destinies of man. Blood flows freely and fear reigns when Scottish lords seize power instead of earning it. The play is both an action-packed thriller and a fascinating psychological study. Macbeth finds that when he is forced to live a lie, his life becomes worthless.”

The performance on Friday, July 26 will be ASL interpreted.
