IN MEMORIAM: DORIS DAY at The George Eastman Museum

*The event has already taken place on this date: Wed, 10/23/2019
A Hollywood star of the highest magnitude, Doris Day (1922–2019) starred in nearly forty big-budget films over a twenty-year career. Her glowing, twinkling smile and smooth, sweet singing voice typified an innocent love popular in the middle of the century. Born Doris Kappelhoff, she adopted the name “Day” (after the song “Day by Day”), at the suggestion of a bandleader in order to fit her name on a marquee. She sang in New York City nightclubs as a teenager and received her big break in 1947 after singing at a Hollywood party. She received the best reviews of her career for Love Me or Leave Me (Charles Vidor, 1955), drawing on her own marriages as experience. The Dryden Theatre presents that and another of her most popular films, The Pajama Game (George Abbott, Stanley Donen, 1957), to celebrate the long life and fantastic career of the star, who died in May.
