Modes in Poetry: Rants, Yarns, Musings

*The event has already taken place on this date: Wed, 12/04/2019
One reason it’s hard to say what a poem is or isn’t is that there are so many ways a poem can be made. Long lines, short lines, paragraphs, collage. Soapbox, anecdote, confession, meditation. In this class, we will explore different modes a poem may be written in depending on its “designs on the reader.”

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

One reason it’s hard to say what a poem is or isn’t is that there are so many ways a poem can be made. Long lines, short lines, paragraphs, collage. Soapbox, anecdote, confession, meditation. In this class, we will explore different modes a poem may be written in depending on its “designs on the reader.” Through discussion and written commentary, we’ll look at how such poets as Dickinson, Berryman, Levis, DiPiero, and others use different modes for differing effects. Participants will generate new writing, and we’ll discuss how it works in the same way we discuss published texts. The emphasis will be on noticing what’s there and how it’s working, rather than “fixing” other people’s poems. The final class will be a public reading.

David Ruekberg's first collection of poems, Where Is the River Called Pishon?, was published by Kelsay Books in 2018. His second book is forthcoming from FutureCycle Press in 2021. He holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College, and enjoyed a residency at Jentel Arts in Wyoming. Read about his poetry at https://poetry.ruekberg.com.
