Shakespeare’s Storyline: Duke Theseus inherits his father’s, King Aegis’, kingdom. Theseus believed that people should govern themselves, he allowed the Athenian people to vote for their representatives. At the beginning of the play, King Egeus decrees that Hermia must obey and marry Demetrius. King Egeus believes in arranged marriages. Yet, Hermia strongly believes that she should be able to marry Lysander, her choice. By the end of the play's journey, Theseus’ modern democratic influence has become the norm, allowing Hermia to choose her true love Lysander.
