In his debut Soft-Boiled: An Investigation Of Masculinity and the Writer’s Life, Stephen J. West seamlessly weaves together personal experiences, studies of detective thrillers, and critical texts on masculinity to offer an honest and moving journey towards self-discovery. Thought-provoking and lyrical, Soft-Boiled poses essential questions: What are the implications of creating art based on another person’s life? How have stories of what it means to be a man shaped West’s roles as a husband, father, community member? Even how he sees himself? “Soft-Boiled is a magical genre remix that challenges received ideas of American Manhood and the Lone Artist, while simultaneously delivering a thrilling and comedic detective noir and moving family drama.”—Torrey Peters, author of Detransition, Baby Stephen J. West’s writing has been published in Brevity, Ninth Letter, PANK, and elsewhere; and is the curator behind the Undead Darlings series. He lives in Rochester, NY, where he is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at St. John Fisher College. This is a hybrid event available both in person and streamed virtually via Zoom.
