Eastman School of Music's Third Thursday Concert on January 16 will feature Rhonda Edington, organ.

Friday, Jan 17 and Saturday, Jan 18: Trumpeter and vocalist extraordinaire Byron Stripling and internationally acclaimed vocal jazz phenomenon Carmen Bradford light up the stage with hits made famous by New Orleans favorites Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Al Hirt, Mahalia Jackson, and Jazz Age icons Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Billie Holiday. Featuring classics from The Great American Songbook, they recreate some of the most memorable moments in musical history while entertaining and capturing everyone’s heart along the way.

Enjoy the 40th Annual MLK Day Celebration in Rochester with a rousing worship service with the MLK Community Choir and hear from Pastor Sebrone Johnson of Greater Harvest Church.

The French electronic music duo known as Daft Punk brought house music to the masses. The Laser Daft Punk show is an exciting tribute to the visual spectacle of the costumed pair, and their extravagant live shows.

Home Remedy features original songs by Lydia Garrison written on fiddle, banjo, and guitar, paired with Rosie Newton’s emotive and powerful singing and playing on fiddle, accordion, and guitar. They both come from the old-time music tradition, which means they know how to put their heads down and get in the groove with fast and rocking fiddle and banjo tunes. Besides the original songs and old-time and Cajun fiddle tunes, they sprinkle in a few songs from the folk canon. They put their hearts into their music and find a deep joy in it.

Joe Newberry and April Verch showcase tunes, ballads, step dancing, and original songs by way of the Ozarks and Canada’s Ottawa Valley, respectively. With beautiful harmony singing, breathtaking instrumentals, and exquisite dancing, these two singular musicians hit the stage in perfect rhythm, making audiences remember why this music existed in the first place. Verch (fiddle, vocals, step dance) is best known for two decades of international touring with The April Verch Band and a 2020 JUNO Award Nominee. Newberry (guitar, banjo, vocals) is an award-winning songwriter known for his work with mandolin icon Mike Compton, as well as The Transatlantic Sessions and A Prairie Home Companion.

Sunday, March 23, 2025, 3pm at Kilbourn Hall: Assembled in the early 1960s in South Africa by Joseph Shabalala, the group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Ladysmith, the name of Joseph’s hometown, about three hours west of Durban and 3 hours east of Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo being the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. Ladysmith Black Mambazo established themselves as the most successful singing group in South Africa. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated the group's rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his famous "Graceland" album – a landmark recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences.

Georgia-born and Cambridge, England-based guitarist singer and songwriter Brooks Williams is a leading light on the acoustic roots music scene, with more than 33 recordings and appearances at countless venues and festivals for more than three decades. From Celtic Connections to Cropredy, Glastonbury to Philadelphia, Kerrville to Winnipeg, there are very few stages Brooks Williams hasn’t played. Brooks Williams’ guitar skills are evident as he effortlessly slides in and out of folk, blues, and country. It comes as no surprise he is listed in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. He wraps that guitar playing around songs with rich narratives about gold prospectors, guitar players, motorcycle riders, golden palominos, and ne’er-do-wells, and sings them with a voice you melt into. His songs are rooted in tradition, wryly observed, and relevant.

The four met in the Circle Singing community of vocal improvisers started by Bobby McFerrin and members of his Voicestra. Assuming roles normally played by instruments, from vocal percussion to bass or horn lines to soloing, they create music that is by turns soulful, whimsical, lyrical, playful, and funny. From moment to moment, you never know what will happen, and neither do they! There could be interactive moments where you get to influence – or participate in – the music making. Be prepared for a myriad of colorful soundscapes and high-flying musical fun!
