Aurora Inn
Built in 1833 by Colonel E.B. Morgan, the Aurora Inn was long the favored resting-place for travelers to Aurora, New York, a major stop along the Erie Canal. Today, following an extensive renovation initiated by Wells College graduate and philanthropist Pleasant Rowland [creator of the American Girl brand], the inn strikes a perfect balance of historic charm and modern luxury -- convenient to Ithaca, Syracuse, and all the attractions of New York’s Finger Lakes region. The stately red-brick building on the shores of Cayuga Lake exemplifies the Federal style, with broad columned balconies and towering chimneys. Its interiors are furnished in an updated period style with fine antiques and Oriental rugs against gleaming wood and elegant papers, paints, and textiles that are lively yet dignified. A collection of historic portraits and paintings of The Hudson River School punctuates the traditional décor. Many of the inn’s ten guest rooms feature working fireplaces and private porch swings; they all boast Frette linens, high-speed internet access, flat screen televisions, and whirlpool baths. A stay at the Aurora Inn includes a full complimentary breakfast in the dining room or on the veranda overlooking the lake, where executive chef Greg Rhoad’s award-winning seasonal refined American cuisine receives enthusiastic acclaim at lunch, dinner, and at memorable private events.
