Raising backyard chickens is becoming a popular hobby for many living in city areas. This class will cover the basics of how to select breeds, prepare for baby chicks, transitioning from brooder to coop, cleaning and maintenance, and basic healthcare for backyard chickens in NY. Knowing how to raise your own chickens responsibly is a very rewarding activity providing more than just fresh, healthy eggs! There will be a closing Q&A session, and all students will leave with a summary packet including some suggested references. Come join us and explore your inner urban-farmer!
About the Teacher:
In 2013 Amanda Playford began learning about organic gardening and healthier alternatives in her own home. After much research about raising backyard chickens, she began raising baby chicks in 2015 keeping in mind they could be raised with a healthy diet, cage free, and provide fresh eggs to her family. She loves gardening and learning about organic methods, sharing her knowledge and passion for gardning and backyard chickens, and spending time outside with her chickens and three dogs.
