“Wandered far and wide”: The Long Poem

Often sweeping in its considerations and ambitious in its scope, the long poem eludes single definition or contains all definitions applied to it. The long poem makes a strenuous demand on its readers’ attention and has been the source of great cerebral, and inspirational, reward. This four-session course is designed to further an understanding of the strategies deployed in this subgenre of poetry. Participants will come to each session prepared to 1) discuss a long poem they have read in advance; 2) share a significant portion of a long poem of their own conception; and 3) receive constructive feedback on said poem.
Together we will study the following poems: “The Schooner Flight” by Derek Walcott; “The Dream of the Unified Field” by Jorie Graham; “The Ambiguous Archive” by Jay Wright; and “Voyage of the Sable Venus” by Robin Coste Lewis.
