Alma de Mexico teaches students the artistry of folkloric dance originating from Mexico. Kids and adults are welcome! Our folkloric classes include faldeo (skirt-work), zapateado (footwork), and rhythmic exploration. Our dancers perform regularly in community events, festivals and schools. Also we have a Mexican music workshop for all ages!

Alma de Mexico Dance and Music Group was established in 2017 by Karla Slack and Rochester, NY community dedicated to rescue traditions through dance and movement. The founder Karla Slack-Alcala it is a Mexican woman with love to her country, customs and traditions. From very short age, she feels passion for dancing, at the age of 8 years she start her education in the Mexican folklore dance. She complements its training with ballet, theater and music classes. With the pass of time, she integrated to other professional dance groups always with the goal of some day to have a dance group that belonged to her, thing that would become reality later. She attended courses in important artistic institutions of Mexico; she performed within the Mexican territory and in other countries like Cuba, Belgium, Spain, Basque country and Guatemala what complementing her dance and chorographic work. Karla studied the degree in physical education. For the year 2005, she funds the group of children "Mexicatlalli", which was integrated by 40 boys and girls who found in her the guide for to love and to enjoy the dance. In 2013 she was married and she has to leave Mexico taking this wonderful country for second homeland. She is member of the International Dance Council in the UNESCO. Today Karla still takes Mexican dance courses, with love towards the stronger dance than ever and the goal to preserve the "soul of Mexico" where she goes..

The members of Alma de Mexico followed two rules: enjoy your artistic work and learn about the Mexican traditions and customs. Our dance group it is integrated for kids and adults from different countries that love to dance and practice Mexican steps and skirt work with a beautiful an energetic music. The musicians of Alma de Mexico are learning the traditional way to play music from different regions of Mexico. Alma de Mexico welcomed people of all ages, races and religions.

Alma de Mexico is dedicated to working collectively; the members who strengthened the organization frequently collaborated with one another. We have been participating in artistic events like Fringe Festival, Time to dance Festival, Memorial Art Gallery Museum, The Strong National Museum of play, La Marketa international, Carnaval Festival and more with varied programs.

Alma de Mexico Group fosters the arts through multiple disciplines and focuses on four program areas: Music, Dance, Traditional Mexican crafts, Spanish language, culinary experiences, Mexican games and Mexican culture presentations.
