(Rochester, NY, 4/17/23) Arts Connexions, a new concert series of the Rochester Oratorio Society, kicks off its season on May 25, 2023, 7:30 P.M., at the Theater@Innovation Square. Performer/Curator Christine Jobson explores the range of languages and styles in the rich African American singing tradition in a program called “Black is Beautiful: Spirituals, Art Songs, and Gospel Music by Black Composers.” Tickets ($15/$10 for students and seniors) are available through the Theater@Innovation Square box office. The program features all Black composers and texts by Maya Angelou, L. Lamar Wilson, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. Collaborating artists include pianist Gregory Thompson, Thomas Warfield, Director of Dance at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Gwendolyn Glenn, of the Rochester Blackstorytelling League.
Arts Connexions sustains and extends the Rochester Oratorio Society's tradition as a home for BIPOC artists and creators since William Warfield's day. Arts Connexions, under the direction of internationally renowned baritone vocalist and diversity consultant, Dr. Carl DuPont, features BIPOC artists and programming. Concerts explore the intersection of art forms such as classical vocal music, dance, spoken word, opera, and musical theater, while celebrating Rochester's historic and formative role in American culture.
