Society for Chamber Music in Rochester’s (SCMR) 39th season commences with Baroque Around the World, which sets the tone for the “Around the World Musical Tour” season and features composers from all across Europe.  Audience members are in for a treat with a pre-concert talk by Artistic Directors and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) members Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr.  The Rochester power couple will also perform at the concert.

SCMR’s annual Baroque season opener is in memory of Marty Abkowitz, longtime board member and lover of Baroque chamber music.  The main feature of this concert is J.S. Bach’s exuberant Brandenburg Concerto No. 2.  Bach's Brandenburg Concerto is one of a set of similar concerti, each of which features different instrumentation or soloists and No. 2 is famous as one of the most demanding piccolo trumpet solos.  Athayde and Behr state “we are also excited to perform other Baroque gems” including the rarely heard Chamber Concerto by Vivaldi and to once again showcase the unique harmonic language and virtuosic writing of Zelenka, amongst others.  Although Zalenka's name is not as familiar as that of Bach or Vivaldi, his music presents examples of the same type of beauty and excitement as his better-known peers.

This concert features one-time only collaborations of Eastman School faculty and RPO members including Bonita Boyd, flute; Erik Behr, oboe; Matthew McDonald, bassoon; Juliana Athayde, violin; Shannon Nance, violin; Daryl Perlo, violin; George Taylor, viola; Kathleen Kemp, cello; James VanDemark, double bass; Wesley Nance, trumpet; and Joseph Werner, harpsichord.   Baroque Around the World includes Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Trio Sonata No. 3, Georg Philipp Telemann’s Viola Sonata in G Major, Antonio Vivaldi’s Chamber Concerto in G Minor, Jean-Marie Leclair’s Violin Sonata in D Major, Arcangelo Corelli’s Trio Sonata, and J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2.

SCMR’s “Around the World Musical Tour” 2015/2016 season presents a musical journey across the globe with intriguing individual programs, each one based on specific geographic locations and performed by superb local artists from the RPO and ESM faculty, as well as a few special outside guests.  SCMR continues to offer different days and times for this season’s concerts to add greater scheduling flexibility for the audience.  Third Presbyterian Church provides a stunning backdrop, visually and acoustically, for the opening Baroque program, while the other five concerts will be held in the magnificent Performance Hall at the Hochstein School of Music, an intimate venue and Rochester favorite.
