The Black Cinema Series, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists (RABJ) and the Little Theatre, presents "Buck and the Preacher" at 7:30 p.m. June 22 in Rochester, NY. This screening is a tribute to Harry Belafonte -- actor, singer and activist -- who passed away in April. Belafonte and his longtime friend, Sidney Poitier star in a western about a wagon master (Poitier) and a con-man preacher (Belafonte) who help freed slaves dogged by cheap-labor agents out West.

Series details: https://thelittle.org/bcs/ A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO HARRY BELAFONTE, LEGENDARY ACTOR, SINGER AND ACTIVIST The Black Cinema Series, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists and the Little Theatre, presents the classic western film "Buck and the Preacher" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (June 22) at the Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue in the End District of Rochester, New York. This special screening is a tribute to Harry Belafonte -- actor, singer and activist -- who passed away in April. Belafonte has a prominent role in the film which was produced in part through his company Belafonte Enterprises. Sidney Poitier, a longtime friend, also stars in the production and made his directorial debut with this film. Following the end of the Civil War, soldier-turned-trail-guide Buck (Sidney Poitier) makes a living by helping former slaves find settlements in the West. Along the way, a con artist, the Preacher (Harry Belafonte), joins the group, and constantly clashes with Buck. But when a gang of bounty hunters, led by the fiendish Deshay (Cameron Mitchell), attempts to round up the freed slaves to bring them back to Louisiana, the two put aside their differences to fight a common enemy. After the film "Buck and the Preacher," there is a post-screening panel discussion. As always questions from the audience are most welcome and encouraged. The series screens both scripted and non-fiction films about the Black experience. With an emphasis on contemporary independent films the series highlights Black perspectives and filmmakers with screenings and panel discussions with community experts and filmmakers. The Rochester Association of Black Journalists strives to ensure diversity in area media and accurate balanced coverage of communities of color while serving as a resource for both established and aspiring communicators of African descent. The organization was founded in 2004. It was named the 2019 NABJ Professional Chapter of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists. The Little Theatre is the premier cultural center for the presentation of American independent and foreign films, visual arts and music for the greater Rochester community. Through educational events the Little Theatre provides local artists a place to share and discuss their visions with a diverse audience.
