Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1. All programs subject to change.
