About “A Christmas Carol”:

Charles Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol” in 1843 as an attempt to stir the British public to an awareness of the poverty and hardships around them. Its tale of a miserly old man who learns the importance of generosity and “Christmas spirit” was an immediate success and has been in continual print to this day. It was first adapted to the stage within months of publication and is one of the most-filmed stories in cinematic history. Dickens himself took to reading the tale to audiences and “Carol” was the work he chose for his farewell performance, mere months before his death.

About the production:

ShakeCo has been staging an annual production of “A Christmas Carol” since 2011. This year’s production is designed to recreate Dicken’s own presentations and Philip Frey will be performing the show (as Dickens) utilizing the same text Dickens used in his public readings. Copies of the book will be available for audience members to follow along (and spot the differences).

About ShakeCo:

ShakeCo: The Shakespeare Company of Greater Rochester is a locally based small-scale production company devoted primarily to the performance of Shakespeare’s works throughout the Greater Rochester area. The Company put on its first production, “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”, in August of 2000 and produced nine shows over the next five years. Returning from an extended hiatus with 2010’s production of “R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots)”, the “Young Audiences” program was re-launched later that year with “Young Prince Hal”. ShakeCo has also produced a series of “ShakeCo Radio Theater” live “old time radio” dramas.
