The tenor and nature of the Civil War changed beginning in January of 1863. Northern policy shifted from a limited war mentality to that of total war. The war no longer would be confined to the battlefields. Instead, this total war policy against the Confederacy now centered on complete military conquest, annihilation and destruction; leaving Southern societal institutions like slavery completely vanquished. The Gettysburg Address reinforces this new mentality. Our class will examine this critically important speech within this framework and context.
