Explore the meaning and purpose of legacy letters and reflect on values, lessons, and intentions for 2026. Dr. Melody A. Cofield and Dr. Jacqueline Cofield, local Rochester authors and educators committed to creating reflective, community-centered programming that supports wellness, creativity, and connection, will teach participants how to begin a personal or family tradition of annual letters through guided prompts and supported writing time.
Dr. Melody A. Cofield is the author of The Gift of Love: A Handbook for Writing Legacy Letters and Ethical Wills (2017), a guide that has helped families and communities rediscover the transformative power of intentional letter writing. Her work demonstrates how legacy letters—rooted in values, memory, and love—can deepen relationships and help individuals articulate what matters most. Dr. Jacqueline Cofield an author and professor of academic writing in the Division of Humanities & Social Sciences at Marymount Manhattan College, with more than twenty years of experience teaching writing across K–12 schools, universities, and cultural institutions. Her work centers multimodal and community-based writing practices that help people find voice, clarity, and purpose on the page. Together, the mother and daughter team bring intergenerational perspectives on writing as a tool for healing, self-understanding, and creative renewal.
