High Falls Women's Film Festival

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 11/04/2018
Founded in 2001, the High Falls Women’s Film Festival celebrates the artistry and innovation of women in film — behind the camera, in leading roles on the screen, and at the heart of storylines. Our focus on women in film is inspired by our city’s legacy as the birthplace of film and the women’s rights movement. The offerings include an international slate of independent films enhanced by panels, workshops, and talks with filmmakers.

12:30 pm - Circle Up – with Q&A - After the brutal slaying of her teenage son, Janet Connors reaches out to her son’s killer to offer a chance for forgiveness. They team up with a group of mothers of murdered children to help young people in their community break the chain of violence and revenge. Circle Up is a call to action for reframing approaches to crime and punishment through the lens of restorative justice, forgiveness, and accountability (In Little Theatre #1)

2 pm - Ingrid – with Q&A -  Ingrid Gipson was a prominent Dallas fashion designer in the 1980s (now aged 76) who dropped her life and moved to the Oklahoma woods in order to pursue a personal and creative existence. She describes the life she now leads as a more meaningful one than she was ever able to have in her former pursuits as a business woman, wife, and mother. Since Ingrid’s move to the woods, she has become a reclusive hermit and spends her time creating sculptural ceramic art and structures on her property out of rocks from the nearby creek. It is a never-ending project. (In Little Theatre #5)

3:15 pm - Darcy – with director Q&A - It’s summer break, and fifteen-year-old Darcy is working in her family’s motel, a seedy operation on the edge of town. Sustaining the motel is the practice of taking in occupants who have until only recently been incarcerated—an arrangement that Darcy’s parents have arranged with the Department of Corrections for a price. The idealistic Darcy sees the motel’s residents only as people, not realizing the danger she might be in. Darcy’s eyes open a bit wider and her feelings are tapped a little deeper when the older, handsome, and brooding Luke checks into the motel. (In Little Theatre #1)

5 pm - Keely and Du – with director Q&A- An extremist anti-choice faction transports a young pregnant woman to a remote location where she will be forced to bring her pregnancy to term. Keely awakens to find herself captive in a rustic cabin in northern Ontario, alone bur for DU, a middle aged zealot who has been assigned to be both her guard and her caregiver. Their only connection to the outside word is Robert, the menacing mastermind of the operation whose unpredictable arrivals by boat bring equal parts provision, preaching and fear. (Little Theatre #5)

6:30 pm - Surviving Home - Surviving Home is an intimate documentary that follows four U.S. military veterans from different generations over an eight year period as they rebuild their lives after war. Interwoven with veterans’ voices from across the country, their unique paths of healing and transformation shed light on long-term consequences of war and raise questions about the roots of war and societal cycles of violence.  (Little Theatre #1)
