Society for Chamber Music in Rochester continues its 42nd season with Mozart in France a chamber music concert and wine tasting on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 4:00 pm at the Performance Hall at Hochstein School of Music. In addition, audience members will enjoy an inside look at the repertoire with a pre-concert talk by Artistic Directors and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Musicians Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr.

Athayde and Behr explain, “Our next concert brings us back to the beautiful setting and acoustics of Hochstein with four vastly different works. Three of these works are clearly linked by their French composers, but Mozart’s seminal Kegelstadt Trio has an unusual link to France - the original manuscript of this work resides in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

SCMR continuously strives to diversify the offering of composers whose works they feature, and for this concert Athayde and Behr were drawn to the music of Lili Boulanger. The younger sister of the enormously influential composition teacher, Nadia Boulanger, Lili died very young and left behind only a small body of work. Nocturne et Cortege is a charming pair of salon pieces; one can almost hear the joyous naïveté of youth. Also on the second half is Saint Saëns’ Oboe Sonata, which is a lyrical and virtuosic gem in the oboe repertoire. The final work is Guillaume Connesson’s Sextour for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Double Bass and Piano. Connesson is currently one of the most widely performed French composers and has already received commissions from the world’s greatest orchestras.

Always looking to enhance the audience experience, Athayde and Berh are “thrilled to announce that David Temperley will be joining us for the pre-concert chats for the rest of the season.” He is a current SCMR board member and Professor of Music Theory at ESM and his knowledge, expertise and unique perspective will be a welcome addition.

SCMR is pleased to continue complimentary wine tastings at intermission. The pre-concert talk is at 3:30pm and the performance begins at 4:00pm. Complimentary valet parking is available at the hotel.
