We begin with a musical evocation of daybreak; Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in B Flat Op. 76, No. 4 (“Sunrise,”) opens with a gentle melody rising out of a surrounding harmonic halo, before revealing its full brilliance. The Piano Sonata No. 2 in G-sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin moves through both moods and modes to juxtapose light and dark, while contemporary composers offer their own interpretations of such contrasts. We close, of course, as darkness falls with Arnold Schoenberg’s evocative Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”), which captures the moonlit scene depicted by Richard Dehmal’s eponymous poem.
