Rochester Community Players presents "BABY," a musical

With lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr.; music by David Shire; and book by Sybille Pearson, "Baby" shares the stories of three couples: an unmarried, college-age pair living together; a mid-life couple yearning to start a family; and an “empty nest” husband and wife back from a special anniversary trip. After going to see a doctor for different reasons, ranging from a regular check-up to possibly having the flu, each woman learns she is pregnant. Amid happiness and heartache, humor and hardship, the three couples soon face very different circumstances during their journeys toward parenthood.

Theatre critic for The New York Times, Frank Rich, said in his review, "At a time when nearly every Broadway musical, good and bad, aims for the big kill with gargantuan pyrotechnics, here is a modestly scaled entertainment that woos us with such basic commodities as warm feelings, an exuberant cast and a lovely score.” Rich also praised the music and lyrics saying, “To keep up with the varied ages of the characters, Mr. Shire writes with sophistication over a range that embraces rock, jazz and the best of Broadway schmaltz ... Mr. Maltby's lyrics are not just smart and funny, but often ingenious." "Baby" is directed by Michael C. Krickmire with Jim Schmitt as musical director and is presented through special arrangement with, and using materials provided by, Music Theater International (MTI). Director Krickmire says, “I’m looking forward to sharing a production of 'Baby' that emphasizes the humanity of the characters and their emotional connection to this show’s music and lyrics.”
