Sankofa 2026

The Annual Sankofa Theatre Fest is an exciting one-act theatrical festival that takes place from August 16 to August 23, 2026, at the Multi-use Community Cultural Center (MuCCC) in Rochester, New York. This festival, part of the MMB Theatre 1 Project, has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene for over 16 years, dedicated to promoting the works of Black playwrights, directors, and actors. The Sankofa Theatre Festival primarily features local playwrights, actors, and directors who come together for one week of theatrical fun. Rochester has a rich history of theatrical productions, but it has not always hosted theater festivals that showcase African American playwrights. The Sankofa Theatre Festival is one such festival, originally organized to provide opportunities for African American playwrights to mount their works.

The festival features a variety of performances, including full-length plays, one-act shows, and table reads. Initially consisting of one-act plays, the festival has previously included two mainstage plays and one one-act play, performed over five nights. Although the format and content have expanded to occasionally include works from other ethnicities, audiences can find comfort in viewing theatrical performances that reflect the culture they represent.
