The program opens with Mason Bates’ Mothership, an energetic piece that imagines the orchestra as a mothership that is ‘docked’ by visiting soloists, who offer brief but virtuosic riffs on the work’s thematic material over action-packed electro-acoustic orchestral figuration. Einstein’s Dream by Cindy McTee reads like a diary, each entry recording the dreams of Albert Einstein as he worked on his theory of relativity. Reich’s Three Movements for Orchestra will engage audiences with its unexpected orchestra layout and three movements – fast, slow fast! – that move from one into another without pause. The program concludes with world-renowned violinist Leila Josefowicz as soloist in John Adams’ Scheherazade .2.
