Award-winning writer and director Devin Lawrence will return to his hometown in November for the debut of his latest psychological horror/thriller movie at The Little Theatre.
"The Disinvited" won the Audience Award for Best Picture at the recent Dances With Films festival in Hollywood, where it received early acclaim for its gripping narrative and powerhouse performances.
The plot begins with Carl (played by Sam Daly) crashing a wedding among old friends and flames. What begins as an earnest attempt to reconnect quickly spirals into paranoia, betrayal and humiliation, turning a hopeful weekend in the desert into a surreal, violent nightmare.
The movie stars Daly (The Office and Bel-Air) in a career defining role, joined by Dani Reynolds, Ryan Vincent and Alana Johnston.
“This was supposed to be a horror film,” Lawrence said. “Straight horror. Easily identifiable. Quickly categorized. But as the story developed, something stranger emerged: a genre-bending psychological thriller dark comedy that doesn’t fit neatly in one box. 'The Disinvited' is disturbing, funny, relatable, and thrilling. Imagine if David Lynch remade Swingers.”
Lawrence pointed out another unique characteristic of the movie. “The song ‘House of the Rising Sun’ becomes a character in and of itself,” Lawrence said. “We have eight original recordings of the song played by various musicians in various compositions.” Award-winning composer Mark Snow supervised the music. Snow is a 15-time Emmy nominee best known for creating the iconic theme song for The X-Files. Snow recently died, and his work on The Disinvited is one of his final projects.
Lawrence also wrote and directed the award-winning psychological thriller "Sympathy, Said the Shark," which debuted at The Little in 2016 and is available on demand. A graduate of Emerson College, Lawrence is a long-time producer, writer and editor on Discovery Channel’s hit series Ghost Adventures.
For "The Disinvited," Lawrence once again teamed up with childhood friend Matthew Mourgides. The pair grew up across the street from each other in Sodus, N.Y. Mourgides, who co-wrote "The Disinvited" with Lawrence and produced the movie, also served as producer on "Sympathy, Said the Shark."
The sneak-peek screening of "The Disinvited" will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at The Little Theatre, 240 East Ave., Rochester. Tickets are available through The Little box office. Following the screening, Lawrence and Matthew Mourgides will do a talk-back in the theater along with executive producer Michael Mourgides and actor Tommy Bechtold, who are also Rochester natives. Lead actor Daly may join them.
After the showing in Rochester, the movie will begin its theatrical release in Los Angeles on Nov. 13 and then be available on all major on-demand platforms starting Nov. 18.
