Image City Photography Gallery is excited to stage "A Study of Light and Land," featuring photography by Gil Maker through July 12. Through striking black-and-white imagery captured in Belize, Ireland, and Scotland, Gil explores the emotional and elemental qualities of landscape, where shifting light, weather, and texture become central to the experience of place.

Stripped of color, these photographs reveal the quiet architecture of the natural world — the sweep of dune grass, the weight of storm clouds, the silhouette of distant hills. Light no longer simply illuminates; it shapes mood and meaning. Shadows deepen, skies grow more dramatic, and familiar landscapes take on a timeless, almost cinematic presence.

A windswept shoreline unfolds in layered grays, balancing soft sand, rugged rock, and turbulent sky with remarkable depth and calm. Elsewhere, a narrow boardwalk disappearing into coastal grasses becomes an invitation inward — a quiet visual journey through movement, texture, and open space. In another image, near-black tones dominate the frame as a break in the storm illuminates a distant ridge, transforming grazing sheep into delicate silhouettes against a luminous horizon.

Gil’s photographs move beyond documentation. Without the distraction of color, viewers become attuned to rhythm, atmosphere, contrast, and gesture — the curve of shoreline, the pull of a path, the tension between darkness and light. Together, these images form a contemplative meditation on solitude, weather, memory, and the enduring emotional power of landscape.
