Telemann wrote two works based on the adventures of Cervantes’ knight errant: a serenata, and this whimsical suite. J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe in C minor is heavily influenced by Vivaldi’s three movement concerto model, infusing it with his own contrapuntal ingenuity. Handel composer his three Water Music suites for a royal pleasure trip up the Thames in 1717. Suite No. 1 is one of his most festive creations. The folia, is an ancient Portuguese dance where young girls engaged in a wild dance of abandon, becomes faster and wilder as the piece goes on. This arrangement by the conductor, is a concerto grosso after Vivaldi’s triosonata, La Folia.
