Field of Honor in Canandaigua to Recognize Heroes Sept. 11-14

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. –St. Mary’s School in Canandaigua will host a four-day Field of Honor display of flags beginning Sept. 11 in tribute to current and past servicemen and servicewomen, victims of 9/11, and first responders. The event will also raise money for the JACK Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2016 following the tragic death of 3-year-old Jack Heiligman of Webster.

Each 8-foot flag at the Field of Honor will bear the name of a veteran, currently serving man or woman, first responder, or 9/11 victim–or a group/department of these individuals. The flags are sponsored for $40 each to honor family members, friends, colleagues, or in the memory of someone special, and each flag can be taken home at the conclusion of the event. To sponsor a flag, visit www.healingfield.org/ canandaigua17/.

Proceeds from the flag sponsorship will benefit the JACK Foundation, which builds playgrounds in Jack Heiligman’s memory, as well as St. Mary’s School, a preschool-8th grade Catholic school founded in 1849.

The Field of Honor will be visible along Main Street in Canandaigua. Event organizers hope to fill the lawn adjacent to St. Mary’s Church with more than 241 flags and display them day and night from Sept. 11-14. Visitors will be able to walk among the flags free of charge. The goal of hosting 241 flags commemorates the 241st birthday of the United States.

“St. Mary’s School is extremely proud to be able to host a Field of Honor event this year for the individuals who serve our country and our community,” said St. Mary’s School Principal Ann Marie Deutsch. “As a fundraising project, we have close ties to the Heiligman family and wish to support their foundation through this first-time event.

“Through our Field of Honor, we want to especially highlight our first responders who everyday perform heroic acts, and some of whom played a big role in our school’s history with their response to the fire of 1974,” said Deutsch.  On Feb. 20, 1974, a fire gutted the 1910 St. Mary’s School building after school had been dismissed for the day. Firefighters from Canandaigua, Geneva, Clifton Springs, Shortsville, Farmington and other nearby stations all reported to fight the blaze, which took more than two hours to bring under control.
