The family friendly event—free and open to the public—will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the RIT Observatory located at 645 John St., Henrietta.

“We will have telescopes set up to observe the moon as well as indoor activities, such as demonstrations on phases of the moon and craters that mark the moon’s surface,” said Stacey Davis, senior lecturer of physics and astronomy at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and interim director of the RIT Observatory.

The International Observe the Moon Night is an annual worldwide public engagement program intended to encourage observation, appreciation and understanding of the moon and its connection to NASA planetary science and exploration. Sponsors include NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute and the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

According to the program website, approximately 450,000 people, since 2010, have participated in an International Observe the Moon Night event held in 98 countries.
