Old-growth forests show us everything a forest can be. When they have been left to grow over many generations, old-growth forests are the best carbon capture technology our planet must offer, contain rich biodiversity, support rare species, and filter water and air. Because old-growth forests have been standing for hundreds or even thousands of years, walking through an old-growth forest can strengthen our connection to the past, to each other, and to our bountiful natural world. These forests are often considered to be some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring natural environments on Earth.
Come learn about old-growth forests, why they are important, how to recognize them and where to find them nearby. We’ll also discuss how the national Old-Growth Forest Network protects and promotes these special places in New York and how you can get involved.
Sarah Robb-Grieco is Northeast Regional Manager for the Old-Growth Forest Network, the only national network in the U.S. of protected, old-growth, native forests where the public can experience their beauty and biodiversity. In her five years with the Network, she has facilitated the addition of over forty northeastern forests. She has 15 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, including running a watershed partnership in Philadelphia to clean up some of the city’s most severely urbanized waterways and co-directing a national, intergenerational dance/theater company. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Vassar College and an M.F.A. in Dance Performance and Choreography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. A Massachusetts native, Sarah lives with her family in Andover, Massachusetts.
