Pysanky Egg Decorating Workshop

The Beginner Pysanky Class will give a bit of history of the particular style of egg art, which is believed to have originated in Ukraine and spread to much of Eastern Europe, though with different styles. In traditional pysanky, the various colors and symbols have meanings associated with them, making the eggs even more intricate in meaning than they appear. Information about the symbols and colors will be distributed along with design sheets, resource information, and some hints and tips.
The eggs are not painted, as most people suspect, but are dyed. The designs are put on the egg by writing or drawing with melted beeswax using a tool called a kistka. Eggs with multiple colors are decorated by using multiple layers of wax and dye. When all the colors and designs have been applied, the wax is melted off and the beautiful artwork is revealed.
In the beginner class, each student will receive an empty egg with some basic design elements drawn on it already as well as handouts to take home. The tools will all be furnished for use in the class and information on where to purchase supplies will be available for those who want to continue with the art. We will practice using the tools before working on the egg itself, and we will all make the same simple design. A variety of colors of dye will be available. Each student will leave the class with a completed egg.
