The museum recognizes three related events that occurred just 50 years ago. First, the planned community known as Riverton had its marketing kick-off with a celebration that drew 30,00 visitors. Among Riverton's many intended features was antique trolleys in the town streets, along with a light-rail line to Rochester and Charlotte. Second, Hurricane Agnes found its way into Pennsylvania and Upstate New York and among its victims was a museum in Pennsylvania. Third, that museum contained several antique trolley cars that were obtained by Riverton founders and these cars became the nucleus of our museum. It's appropriate for our museum to reflect on all that happened a half-century ago, so we're commemorating it all on Sunday, July 17!
2-mile round-trip trolley rides will be departing the museum at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30, and are included in the museum admission of $10 adults, $9 seniors 65+, and $6 youths age 3 - 12. Worth seeing at the museum are several full-size trolley cars, a steam locomotive, a giant model railroad, and the Midtown Plaza Monorail. Numerous other vehicles, both highway and horse-drawn, plus smaller transportation artifacts, models and exhibits are joined by a video in the gallery showing the Rochester Subway in its final years. Don't forget the gift shop too!
The New York Museum of Transportation is located just 20 minutes south of Rochester at 6393 E. River Road, in Rush. www.nymtmuseum.org (585) 533-1113
