Rochester's Rich History: Women Voted in New York--Before Columbus!

While white women in the 18th and 19th centuries had no legal rights, Haudenosaunee (traditional Iroquois) women were on equal standing with the men. Come celebrate Women’s History Month at this informal storytelling presentation.

While white women in the 18th and 19th centuries had no legal rights, Haudenosaunee (traditional Iroquois) women could choose all political representatives, were economically independent, and lived in a society that dealt harshly with violence against women long before Columbus came to these shores. When women in New York State began to organize for their rights in 1848, they took their cue from the nearby Haudenosaunee communities. Come celebrate Women’s History Month at this informal storytelling presentation.
