Wine and the Rise of Western Civilization

We will study the history and impact of wine making culture from ancient Persia and Asia Minor through the 16th century Renaissance.

This class will cover:
1. From East to West: The Movement of Wine Culture
We will trace wine’s progression from its earliest discovery in Persia, now Iran, along trade routes to the West.
2. Ancient Egypt and the Holy Land: Wine as the Divine
Wine is embedded into the cultural and religious lives of the people that occupied ancient lands.
3. The Greeks: Wine Fueled Democracy
We will tell the story of how wine and Greek symposia began democratic development.
